Land is your greatest asset, and it will become more and more expensive as you progress. Level 12, when the training wheels come off and you can build as many fields or cows as you want, is the perfect time to introduce a trick to maximize space and production: Temping or Flex Space.
On every Homestead, I like to have 2 - 4 spots where I can put any building I need, and change it any time I need. At Level 20, on Sundale I was running 4 level 4 Fields, 3 level 4 Cow sheds, 2 level 3 Bakeries, and 4 6x9 plots that can be fields, bakeries, or cows. Why have 4 cows sit idle all night when I could be growing 6 hour sunflowers (level 22)? Need milk for a contract? 7 cows is a lot faster than 3.
This also provides me with instant land and workers, should I level up and need to place a Pancake House. It just means next expansion I can restore one of my flex spots.
The ability to flip around buildings becomes even more awesome when you are able to buy building storage boxes at level 22 (200 gems for the first one, 1,500 - gems for the second, 4,000 gems for the third, etc) and can store and place upgraded buildings instantly.
You get 75% of your materials (last level upgraded) back when you bulldoze a structure, so you can temporarily swap low-cost, low-level buildings based on your immediate needs (like fulfilling a difficult corn contract or preparing for a Guild event). Anything with a build time under 10 minutes works well.
